There’s certainly nothing wrong with being a geek. Especially if someone’s going to make you a great cake like one of these.

GeoEye02

This is a historic moment in time captured from space. This large scale image of Washington D.C. was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on Jan. 20, 2009. To commemorate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

The image is about 11Mbs and defiantly worth a download.

I’ve mentioned it before on the blog, but it’s worth checking out the Bad Usability Calendar again, since they’ve just updated it for 2009.

Bad Usability Calendar 2009

The calendar is a handy reminder of various usability issues you should keep in mind. I especially like the slight dig to 37signals, who do design some great, useful and usable products but have pissed off some users due to their stance of desiging for themselves (as users), while seeming to dismiss their actual users’ requests for features.

The calendar is available in multiple languages including English, Deutsch, Italiano, Norsk and Lolspeak.

Whitney Hess has written a great article called The 10 Most Common Mistakes about User Experience Design. It lists 10 things that UX/UED is not:

  1.  User interface design
  2. A step in the process
  3. About technology
  4. Just about usability
  5. Just about the user
  6. Expensive
  7. Easy
  8. The role of one person or department
  9. A single discipline
  10. A choice

Although all the points are important, number 10 is the most important. As has been pointed out by Matt in the comments, all products have a user experience, but not all of them have been intentionally designed.

Two slices of toast with jam on works better for me than two Oatibix.

By 10:30 the cold had got to the design team and we were hungry. Kat took initiative and bought a sausage roll. Then Gordon and I followed suit off the back of her recommendation.

Here are the results.

The pastry was very light, minimal amount of grease. You wouldn’t want to pick it up without some sort of hand protection. Then we get onto the sausage, which had some kind of green herbs in and cooked to a high enough standard to eat safely.

Overall, three thumbs up.

For best results serve with Ketchup and use a knife and fork.
